How To Make The Halo Effect Work For You

A Woman’s greatest asset is her beauty — Alex Comfort

The halo effect theorizes that people are quick to judge others based on initial first impressions. For instance, attractive people are often approached by others. It is assumed that they are healthy, kind, and enjoyable to be around. Moreover, people who are considered gorgeous are also extended grace to other characteristics of their personality. They are assumed to be smart, trustworthy, and solid until proven otherwise. It may seem superficial. However, it is what it is. Thirty-eight percent of people’s first impressions involve appearance and 55% are about body language. That said, it’s not the best idea to wake up and leave the house looking sloppy. That’s especially if you’re reliant on the help of others. Here’s how you make the halo effect work for you, gaining favor or support over the people around you.

Show self-confidence

Self-confidence should not be underestimated. High self-confidence can supercharge both your professional and personal life. For instance, it can help you get the promotion you’ve been after, or get a date with that guy you’ve had your eye on. People will note when you are brimming with confidence. And so, often take time to focus on your unique talents and what you’ve already accomplished. Doing so will get you in the habit of believing in yourself. It’s easy to lose confidence if you believe you have achieved nothing.

Also, if you have a habit of uptalking—that insufferable verbal phenomenon of raising your voice at the end of a sentence, you’ll want to stop if you want to be perceived as a confident, believable woman. Uptalking undermines your level of confidence to death in the mind of the listener.

Look attractive

You want to strive to always look your best and have a bright and glowing aura. First, you never know who you will bump into. More importantly, well-groomed women are getting paid 20% more at work. Effort-based attractiveness consists of not just knowing how to apply makeup well or having a polished work hairstyle. It also involves consuming a healthy diet and following a good skin care regimen.

To add, you want to know what colors complement your skin tone and what fashions suit your body type. When everything is on point, people will think more highly of you and flock to you as if your beauty will somehow reflect on them.

Maintain a healthy weight

The truth of the matter is society judges women who are on the heavy less favorably than women who are not. Overweight women earn less than slim women. Being 13 lbs overweight means losing $9000/year in salary. Looking back, I can’t help but wonder if the outcome would have been different for Stacey Abrams had she took the advice given to her by consultants to lose weight and change her looks to be a “more palatable candidate”. You may recall she was involved in one of the most contested elections of the midterms, losing by just two percentage points to Brian Kemp in the Georgia gubernatorial race. But I digress.

Even though women in America and around the world are larger now than ever before in history, the prejudice against plus-size women is still real. According to research done by WooPlus, a dating app specifically for plus-sized women, 71% of its users say they were fat-shamed on regular apps.

Sadly, too, overweight patients tend to get worse care i.e. misdiagnosis, late or missed diagnosis, than their slimmer counterparts. Many doctors don’t see past physical appearance. If I were overweight, I’d be motivated to shed some pounds for that reason alone. Needless to say, having a positive relationship with your doctor is important. You’re relying on him /her to give you a correct diagnosis and the appropriate treatment.
